The Good Fight trailer is officially here and it’s steamier and edgier than its mothership series. The spin-off of the Emmy-winning drama The Good Wife consists of 10 episodes and picks up one year after the events of the series finale.
The trailer basically gives viewers an overview of Christine Baranski’s character Diane Lockhart, who is on the verge of retirement until a financial scam drains her out. Her old law firm won’t take her back so she’s left with no choice but to team up with her young protege and goddaughter, Maia (Rose Leslie), who happens to be the daughter of the scam artist whose reputation is now tainted, and Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) at a new law firm.
Aside from the trailer for The Good Fight, series creators Michelle and Robert King revealed during the TCA press tour how the show will handle President Trump — considering The Good Wife tapped on issues of national security and politics during Barack Obama’s presidency.
Even though a dramatically different president takes office, the series creators believe that the new administration will help fuel The Good Fight.
“I think this election gave us a spine,” said Michelle King. “What was good, the world changed on us. The Good Wife was a little bit about the Obama years. This gives shape to a new show.”
“The interesting thing is you have a lead character who is in a moral kind of practical free fall in a similar way to what the country is feeling right now. How do you take the next step up when there’s no foundation? Where are we morally?” Baranski added.
Speaking of Baranski, the lead star also shared her thoughts on the possible appearance of Julianna Margulieson the spin-off.
“Of course we would always welcome Julianna if she ever wanted to be back on the show,” Baranski told TVGuide.com when discussing her former co-star, who played Alicia Florrick. “But I couldn’t say how [creators Robert and Michelle King] would write it or how Julianna would want to reenter it. I can only speak for my character saying I think there’s a great capacity there to get past things.”
To refresh your memory, The Good Wife wrapped up with Diane slapping Alicia after she made Lucca grill Diane’s husband Kurt (Gary Cole) about his affair during a cross-examination.
Even without Margulies, fans can still expect several familiar faces on The Good Fight. Carrie Preston, Sarah Steele, Matthew Perry, John Benjamin Hickey and Rita Wilson are set to make cameos.
What do you think of the trailer?
The Good Fight will premiere Sunday, February 19, with a special broadcast on CBS, then move exclusively to CBS All Access, CBS’ VOD and live streaming service.
