There’s a lot of news being announced for American Horror Story, including its multi-season renewal. And now we’re getting our first hint at the casting for next season.
At the Television Critics Association winter press tour, creator Ryan Murphy revealed (via Deadline) that Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will be returning for season 7, which is expected to air in fall 2017.
Both actors have appeared in every season of American Horror Story to date. Most recently, Paulson played Audrey Tindall and Peters played Rory Monahan in season 6, Roanoke.
It was previously announced that some Freak Show characters will be featured in season 7. It is unclear, though, if Paulson and Peters will be reprising their season 4 characters, Bette and Dot Tattler and Jimmy Darling, respectively.
These are the only two cast members that have been revealed at this time.
Murphy and FX Network CEO John Landgraf also spoke a little bit about what fans can expect in season 7, with Murphy calling it “a modern-day story.”
“Ryan has another really innovative idea to do something fresh and different,” Landgraf said. “There’s a marketing and promotional hook around that.”
That marketing hook doesn’t mean FX will employ its season 6 strategy of keeping everything under wraps, according to Murphy. “I don’t know that we’d do that again,” he said. “I think maybe we would release [some hints] of it earlier. I just started writing it. I haven’t decided how to do it yet.”
As for the storylines beyond season 7, Landgraf admitted that FX renewed American Horror Story for multiple seasons despite not having an idea of what seasons 8 and 9 will entail.
“We know explicitly what next season is about,” he told TVLine. “We don’t know what the eighth and ninth season are about. So, yes, we’re extending [the renewal] out of trust and good will. I honestly couldn’t tell you what season 8 or 9 will be, but I can tell you I’m really excited about season 7. Also, Ryan made a commitment that he would continue to run that show.”
We may not know much about the upcoming seasons, but at least we know Ryan Murphy is sticking around as showrunner.
