The CW Confirms Plans for a ‘Charmed’ Reboot with One Big Change

In the years to come, 2016 will be remembered as the year of reboots and revivals. From Fuller House to Gilmore Girls, it seemed like all of our old favorites were coming back from the dead. But while 2016 may be over, 2017 has only just begun, and another major TV reboot has already been announced. The CW has confirmed that they’re developing a rebooted version of the hit supernatural drama, Charmed.

Charmed initially ran for eight seasons, from 1998 to 2006. The Aaron Spelling drama followed the lives of three twenty-something year-old witches–Prue, Piper, and Phoebe, before introducing their half-sister Paige (played by Rose McGowan). Each sister boasted different powers like telekinesis and the ability to freeze time, and they used their gifts to help those in need who were haunted by evil spirits.

While the original show took place in modern times, Entertainment Weekly reports that the reboot is set to take place in 1976. There’s no word yet on the plot of the new series, but Jane the Virgin writers Jessica O’Toole, Amy Rardin, and Jennie Synder are attached, so it seems reasonable to expect a good dose of humor and heart.

Since the Charmed reboot will take place twenty years before the original series, it would appear doubtful that any of the original cast would be involved. But in a show about the supernatural, nothing’s ever really off the table. Holly Marie Combs, who played middle sister Piper Halliwell, tweeted out her warm wishes for the upcoming show while Alyssa Milano, who played psychic Phoebe, celebrated the love of Charmed fans everywhere.
