Could ‘Riverdale’ Set the Stage for ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ to Return?

Riverdale hasn’t even premiered yet but the people behind The CW’s new dark teen drama are giving fans another reason to tune in. Not only does executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa mention the possibility of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, famously played by Melissa Joan Hart on the ABC sitcom, making an appearance on Riverdale, he also teases about Sabrina getting a potential spin-off.
“Some people don’t even know that Sabrina is in the Archie family,” Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly. “There is absolutely a universe where Sabrina pops up in Riverdale or one town over in Greendale. Certainly, the priority is launching Riverdale and making sure that show is as good as it can be and as embraced as we want it to be.”
“I’ll just tease that Sabrina has potential with a capital P,” he continued.
Just like Riverdale, a Sabrina reboot would certainly have a darker and edgier tone. In an interview with at the Television Critics Association gathering, Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that it would be inspired by Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the horror comic book that is influenced by The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby. “It’s very much set in the 1960s,” he said. “It’ll be an occult thing.”
Taking a page from the Marvel circuit, the people behind Riverdale are looking forward to exploring more of the Archie universe even though CW president Mark Pedowitz hasn’t committed yet to branching out. Aside from a possible new take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, there’s also an Archie Broadway musical from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, which “is going to be much more of a lighter comedy.”
Should there be a Sabrina reboot?
