In Game of Thrones season 6 fans met an often-mentioned but never-before-seen family. Game of Thrones season 6 finally introduced Samwell Tarly’s family including his hunky younger brother Dickon, played by Freddie Stroma. It turns out that the Tarly family’s appearances will not be isolated to just season 6. IGN reports that some members of the clan are set to return but their faces might look a little bit different by season 7. Freddie Stroma announced he is not returning to Game of Thrones.

Besides Game of Thrones, Freddie Stroma is probably best known to TV audiences from UnREAL, where he played first season suitor Adam Cromwell. He is also starring in ABC’s upcoming time travel drama, Time After Time, where he will be playing a young, hot version of famous science-fiction author H.G. Wells. At the TCAs Stroma explained it is because of his starring role on Time After Time that he is unable to return to Game of Thrones.

Stroma said of his Game of Thrones return, “I was shooting (Time After Time), so my character, I wouldn’t be able to go back now. It was still fun. I got to be in that world. I’ve watched all of it. It’s just an incredible TV show.”
Apparently when he first landed the role, Stroma was told there was a chance his character would return. When he booked his series regular role on Time After Time however, it put an end to him returning to Game of Thrones.
Yet just because Stroma isn’t coming back doesn’t mean that his character, Dickon, won’t make a reappearance. Game of Thrones fansite Watchers on the Wall reported back in November that actor Tom Hopper, from Black Sails, has been recast as Dickon. Hopper was seen on set with the actor who plays Sam’s father Randyll Tarly, James Faulkner. The role was unconfirmed until Stroma announced he was unable to return to Game of Thrones.
There are no hard feelings between Stroma and Game of Thrones about the recasting. “Even just to get such a toe in there is fun,” Stroma said of his experience on the show. “Just to be on set and kind of feel like I was in that world, I was a fan sitting there at the table doing that scene,” Stroma said of his experience on the show.
But what do you think? Are you sad to know that Dickon has been recast? Are you familiar with Freddie Stroma as an actor and wanted to see more? Are you excited that we haven’t seen the last of Sam’s family on the show? Why do you think the Tarly family will reappear?
Game of Thrones season 7 will return in the summer on HBO.
