As was previously reported, the future of Once Upon a Time is undecided. There is a chance that the current season 6 might be the last or the show could continue for one more year. Now the future of Once Upon a Time has gotten even more complicated. TV Guide reports that Once Upon a Time star Jennifer Morrison is uncertain about season 7 and her role in it.
Morrison might play the lead character of Once Upon a Time, Emma Swan, but her future with the show is far from steady. Jennifer Morrison’s contract with Once Upon a Time runs out this April. This throws everything into uncertainty. “My contract ends in April on Once Upon a Time, I don’t know what that means,” Morrison said on the podcast The Drop-In. “They haven’t picked up the show officially yet — they might, they might not. We are just waiting now to see if the network decides to continue with the show.”
The real concerning (or interesting) thing, depending on your perspective, is what Morrison added. Apparently there is a very real chance that if Once Upon a Time continues into season 7 it could be a radically different show with a wildly different cast.
“If they do continue with the show, if they’re going to rework it to be something else, or if they’re going to invite people to stay. We’re just in a holding pattern right now.” Morrison said, listing the options that are being discussed. This fits with comments from ABC boss Chaning Dungey, who at the TCAs said the show might not “necessarily” bring all the cast back for a possible season 7.
If Morrison isn’t involved in Once Upon a Time season 7, though, it doesn’t sound like it will be her choice. She explained that she enjoys playing Emma very much and is grateful for what the show and the character have done for her career.
“I have a really fierce loyalty to the show. I am fiercely protective of the character. I feel like so many amazing things have come to my life because of it. It’s really made my life better in so many ways. I don’t have any interest in abandoning something that is such a special part of my life, but I also know I don’t have it in me to do it forever, so it’s more about a life decision, and I don’t even know how to make that life decision until I know what ABC even wants,” Morrison said.
Emma might not be everyone’s favorite character but she is the central figure. She is the driving force of almost all the action. The story Once Upon a Time has only existed to this point because of Emma and her journey. If Once Upon a Time season 7 is truly a new chapter, Emma should at least be involved in launching it. Though if Once Upon a Time is planning on rebooting the series, it would seem better to end things with season 6 and then begin a spin-off rather than prolonging the series unnaturally.
But what do you think? Would you watch Once Upon a Time without Emma? What do you think will happen with season 7? Do you think the show should end with season 6 now? Which members of the cast would you want to stay with the show?
