Indian television is the only place where everyone ages gracefully. One of those shows is Saath Nibhaana Saathiya where even great-great-great-grandmothers look like teenagers. The makers are planning yet another leap in the show which has made three main actors walk out of the daily soap. Tanya Sharma, Lovey Sasan and Sonam Lamba were asked to play mothers to grown up sons and daughters which led to them deciding to quit the show. They are not the first actors who are quitting a show after being asked to play older roles because of leaps.
Tanya Sharma, who plays Meera in the show, will have to play a mother to a grown-up son. The actress saw no reason to stay back in the show and decided to call it quits. She will be submitting her resignation papers soon to the production house. Lovey Sasan, who plays Paridhi in the show, is already a grand mother. After the leap she will be shown as great grandmother which is bothering the actress. Earlier also Lovey had quit the show midway but she came back after the makers changed the track and gave her an increment. Though a 20-something actress, Lovey looks quite unconvincing as a mother-in-law in the show.
Sonam Lamba, who plays Vidya in the show, will also be shown as a mother. In fact, Sonam has been wanting to and planning to quit the show for quite some time now. Though among all these young actors, there is lead of the show Gopi, played by Devoleena Bhattacharjee, who will be shown as discovering her long lost son in the show. Apparently Devoleena was also going to quit the show last year. She had similar issues of not playing a grandmother after the leap but, according to sources, she got a huge increment and a new double track was promised to her. That’s why she continued in the show though she had to play a grandmother in the show. In fact, now Devoleena happens to be the highest paid actor in the show.
One actor who has been consistent in Saath Nibhana Saathiya is Rupal Patel. She has been the permanent fixture of the show since the show started six years back. Even after the leap, her role in the show is going to be solid. The senior actress does not mind playing grandmother or great-grandmother as long as her role has weight as an actress to perform.
It’s not just the ladies that planned to or actually quit the show. Mohammed Nazim, who is the main lead, had also quit and his character Ahem was killed. But Nazim came back as Jaggi with, of course, a better pay cheque and a track that’s prominent. Seems like the onscreen drama of the show has its toll in real life too in Saath Nibhana Saathiya. We wonder if the makers will be able to retain the actresses like they did for others.
